Jay Kay, known best as the frontman for funk-rock band Jamiroquai, has, to make an understatement, an impressive collection of vehicles, including classics. The crown jewel of the lot is likely the purple Lamborghini Diablo featured in the music video for his 1996 hit “Cosmic Girl.”
But Jay Kay’s collection is always changing; in fact, he’s recently sold a BMW 850 CSi; a 1967 Ford Mustang 390GT; a 1989 BMW E30 M3; and a few other special vehicles.
The one that we’re focusing on in his latest sale happens to be Jay’s first car, the one he learned to drive in, a 1972 BMW 1602. He bought the vehicle with about 22,000 miles on it, and drove it another 30,000 miles before selling it to a fellow bandmate.
He would eventually buy it back with the intent to restore it, but being a rock star does take up some time, and he never got around to it.

It stands to reason the humble BMW would be left behind as Jay Kay’s collection expanded to feature so many impressive and expensive cars. The lowly four-cylinder sedan isn’t totally without worth, however, this being one of the cars BMW’s racing reputation was built upon. Furthermore, the 1602 would go on to inspire the world-beating 2002, and morph into the E30 M3.
The BMW is being sold by Classic Car Auctions , and is expected to fetch in the range of 8,000 to 10,000 pounds — just under $17,000 in this country.
