Mazda3 with turbocharger and AWD could be on the way

According to screenshots from Mazda’s dealership extranet system, the turbocharged vehicle will be coming to U.S. retailers for the 2021 model year. With possible all-wheel-drive available in the vehicle, we could be looking at a proper hot version of the Mazda3, in either hatch or sedan configuration.

Unfortunately, all turbocharged models are listed with a ‘6A’ designation, which means they’ll only be paired with an automatic transmission. If you want a manual transmission, you’ll have to opt for the version without the power-adder.

Which turbocharged engine the car will receive remains a mystery, but it’s likely the 2.5-litre four-cylinder turbo found in the Mazda6, CX-5, and CX-9. The engine produces 250 hp and 310 lb.-ft. of torque, which would be a welcome bump to the current figures.

The dealership system also shows Mazda3 models with all-wheel-drive paired with a turbocharger listed “PP,” which could stand for Premium Package or Performance Package. Whether or not Mazda would slap the “Mazdaspeed” badge on the vehicle remains to be seen, but perhaps it will if a manual transmission ever makes it to the turbo’d 3.
