New Dodge Challenger ACR rumours suggest two flavours, limited run
Autos
Fans of the Dodge brand know when the trio of consonants ‘A,’ ‘C,’ and ‘R’ get strung together, the nation’s racetracks become awash with a special breed of car from the speed gang in Auburn Hills. The latest vehicle rumoured to earn new ACR stripes? The two-door Challenger, of course.

Rumours of this trim have been floating around since last year but reports from the knowledgeable nerds at Allpar put this news back to the fore. According to their source, now delivering updated specifics, the Challenger ACR would shed weight and gain grip.

In fact, we may see a brace of ACR models, one with the 392 Hemi; and another with the 797-horsepower nuclear reactor currently residing in the Hellcat Redeye. This makes a modicum of sense, since ACRs generally find use on the track, and several amateur racing classes prohibit the use of power adders like a supercharger.

Challengers, no matter the model, are exceeded in density only by various black holes in outer space. It makes sense, then, that the Challenger ACR apparently has a target weight of less than 4,000 pounds. For comparison, a Challenger Hellcat weighs almost 4,500 pounds.

Stripping that much mass out of a car will require ingenuity and more than a few lightweight materials. Dodge has the former in spades, but the latter costs money, something at a premium for the company (and all automakers, given global events). Hints suggest that means a high price and a very limited production run.

The development team is allegedly benchmarking the Viper ACR, a machine which set a 7:01.67 lap time – shockingly close to the contemporary Lamborghini Huracán Performante – at the Nürburgring Nordscheleife thanks to massive downforce produced by an all-new aerodynamic body kit which included a towering rear wing. This differed from the Time Attack (TA) models, which literally attacked time by wearing natty corner splitters and a carbon-fibre decklid spoiler.

The existence of a Challenger ACR would be an excellent foil to the Shelby GT500 and Camaro ZL1 1LE. It should also tide Mopar fans over until a refreshed Challenger finally comes to market, at a date that’s reportedly been pushed back due to the pandemic.
