Hyundai’s Accent compact will be leaving the Canadian market at the end of 2020, the automaker said late July, bringing to a close a production run that stretches back to 1994.

The tiny vehicle, available in sedan or hatchback, was the best-selling small car in Canada from 2009 to 2018, and remained a popular model for the brand all the way up to the end.

The Accent follows a host of other small vehicles getting the axe in Canada, including the Toyota Yaris , Chevy Sonic, and the Honda Fit . Interestingly, the very similar Rio from Hyundai’s sister company Kia has not yet been discontinued.

Buyers who are interested in a small car should instead look at Hyundai’s Kona and Venue models, according to Don Romano, CEO of Hyundai Canada.

Is Canada’s subcompact car segment doomed?

“In the midst of the most aggressive product offensive in Hyundai history, we are rapidly improving the breadth and depth of our successful product portfolio,” said Romano. “The successful introductions of both the Hyundai Venue and Kona represent great opportunities to offer the very best award-winning vehicles on the market to our customers who are seeking entry-level and well-equipped transportation.”

Retiring after its fifth generation, the Accent has sold more than 462,494 units in Canada since it was first brought to market until the end of June 2020.
