First Nations breakfast program thief gets 3-year prison term

A federally appointed consultant who stole $1.2 million from a children’s nutrition program in the northern Ontario Kashechewan Cree community was sentenced to three years in prison on Friday in Thunder Bay.

Giuseppe (Joe) Crupi of Thunder Bay, Ont., was also ordered on Friday to pay back more than $656,157 to the First Nation to make up for the children’s breakfast funding that was stolen.

He was also fined $335,000 for funds he is said to have appropriated for his personal use.

Court heard only $100,000 of the $1.3 million in federal funds actually was used to give the children breakfasts.

The sentence was far too light for Deputy Grand Chief Anna Betty Achneepineskum of the Nishnawbe Aski Nation, which includes Kashechewan.

“It doesn’t seem to match the crime,” Achneepineskum said in a telephone interview.

“We have very limited access to resources,” Achneepineskum said. “For him to steal pretty well out fo the mouths of children is very disturbing.”
