‘I don’t remember’ killing five-year-old daughter, Newfoundland man testifies

ST. JOHN’S, N.L.—A Newfoundland man accused of killing his five-year-old daughter says he doesn’t remember how she died.

Trent Butt testified Tuesday at his first-degree murder trial in the death of Quinn Butt at his home in Carbonear, N.L., an hour west of St. John’s.

Butt said when he found the girl dead in bed in April 2016, he concluded he must have suffocated her — and that’s when he decided to try to kill himself and set his home on fire.

The Crown has argued the 40-year-old Butt wanted to punish his estranged wife, Andrea Gosse, but he testified he had not planned to kill his daughter.
