Newfoundland fisherman continues hunger strike protest after call from minister
Canada
ST. JOHN S, N.L. - The mother of a hunger-striking fisherman says her son is continuing his protest of what he says is Ottawa s dire mismanagement of stocks, despite getting a phone call from federal Fisheries Minister Dominic LeBlanc.

Linda Gillett says her son Richard spoke with LeBlanc on Thursday and wants a commitment of a meeting with the minister in writing before he will agree to give up his protest.

A spokeswoman for LeBlanc also confirms the call took place and says the two have agreed to speak again.

Laura Gareau says LeBlanc expressed concern for Richard Gillett s health, and urged him to make his health and family a priority.

Linda Gillett says her son is entering the ninth day of his protest and is getting weaker due to his lack of nourishment.
