MONTREAL—Quebec is moving to make masks mandatory on public transit across the province ahead of a possible second wave of COVID-19 .
Premier François Legault made the announcement at a news conference in Montreal today, saying the measure will come into effect on July 13.
Legault says after a two-week probationary period, people not wearing one will be denied access to public transit.
Officials have pushed wearing a mask in situations where physical distancing isn’t possible, but resisted making them mandatory for a number of reasons, including access.
Legault says the province is at a new stage now and it’s a question of respect, since masks are more to protect others than oneself.
The measure will apply to everyone aged 12 and older.
Quebec reported 68 new cases of COVID-19 across the province today along with 18 more deaths — seven of which were in the previous 24 hours.
