Ugo Fredette has been charged Monday in a Saint-Jérôme courtroom with first-degree murder in connection with the death of his former partner, Véronique Barbe, on Sept. 14.
He was originally charged with second-degree murder on Sept. 25 in her death.
Monday, a second charge was added.
The 41-year-old Saint-Eustache man now also faces a second-degree murder charge in the death of 71-year-old Yvon Lacasse, whose car police believe Fredette stole after Barbe’s body was discovered in the family home.
At the time, Lacasse was reported missing from the Lachute area, setting off a massive search.
On Sept. 20, the Sûreté du Québec (SQ) found a body on a dirt road along the Rivière Rouge in Arundel.
The following day, the SQ confirmed the body found was that of Lacasse.
After being arrested, Fredette was hospitalized in Ontario following an attempted suicide while in the custody of Ontario Provincial Police in Renfrew.
