The Toronto Film Critics Association (TFCA) has named Bong Joon-ho’s Parasite the best picture of 2019. The group (of which this writer is a member) also chose the Korean-language film in the best foreign-language category, and named Bong best director.

The accolades add to a pile of plaudits the film has racked up since taking the Palme d’Or prize at Cannes in May. The L.A. Film Critics Association also gave it best picture and best director prizes, and named Song Kang-ho best supporting actor for his role in the film.

Parasite has also been named best foreign-language film by the National Board of Review and the New York Film Critics Circle, and it has seven nominations at the upcoming Critics Choice Awards, and three at the Golden Globes.

In other categories, the TFCA gave the best-screenplay prize to Martin Scorsese’s The Irishman. Booksmart from director Olivia Wilde was named best first feature. And American Factory and Missing Link took the best documentary and best animated feature prizes, respectively.

Acting prizes went to Adam Driver (Marriage Story) and Lupita Nyong’o (Us), while best supporting awards were given to Laura Dern (Marriage Story) and Brad Pitt (Once Upon a Time … in Hollywood).

The awards will be bestowed at the TFCA’s annual gala, Jan. 9 at the Omni King Edward Hotel. That will also mark the announcement of the winner of the $100,000 Rogers Best Canadian Film Award. The three nominees for Canada’s richest arts prize – an all-female slate this year – are Antigone, directed by Sophie Deraspe; Firecrackers, by Jasmin Mozaffari; and The Body Remembers When the World Broke Open, by Kathleen Hepburn and Elle-Máijá Tailfeathers.
