McKenna concerned global politics may keep Paris agreement rules at bay

OTTAWA - Environment Minister Catherine McKenna says Canada will be ready to up its emissions-cutting game when the Paris climate-change agreement kicks in.

McKenna is heading to Poland next week for the annual United Nations climate-change meeting, where the nations of the world intend to decide on rules for how each country will be held accountable for meeting its promised cuts to carbon emissions.

Environment groups around the world say no country is doing enough to slow climate change and the Paris targets aren t good enough.

McKenna says Canada is focused on meeting its existing Paris-agreement targets to reduce emissions to 70 per cent of what they were in 2005 by 2030 and isn t immediately toughening that goal.

But the Paris agreement requires signatory nations to increase their goals in 2020 and she says Canada will be ready to do it by then.

The elections of governments less enthusiastic about multilateral deals such as the Paris accord is going to make setting the rules harder and McKenna says she isn t certain the Paris agreement itself would be signed if it were being negotiated today.
