Bouchard comes close to medal in Olympic judo: ‘It was a huge achievement’
I had a smile on my face the last 10K with so many people out cheering for us, the 26-year-old Winnipegger said. It was really an amazing experience. Not that many people can say theyve ridden in the Olympics and this has left me even more motivated looking to the future and hopefully riding in future Games.

For the first 130 kilometres of the gruelling road race, Kirchmann was suffering.

The course headed west from Fort Copacabana before rising into the mountainous terrain, where the cyclists needed to complete three circuits before returning to the seashore.

It was incredibly tough, she said. This course is really challenging, from the cobbles, the super short, steep climbs and the long, relentless climb at the end there. And the wind was also a factor today.

I really suffered out there. Its one of the hardest one-day races Ive done.

It was Kirchmanns first appearance in the Olympics and Canadian team leader Jacques Landry believes she has a bright future, looking ahead four years to Tokyo.

She has become very successful on the pro tour with Dutch team Liv-Plantur and she has races upcoming in the Netherlands, Sweden, France and Spain.

This was just one race, and shes certainly not going to let it shape her career.

Teams raced pretty aggressively the whole day and I knew from the first few climbs that I wasnt feeling amazing, Kirchmann said.

As she approached the last climb she knew she had a decision to make try to make a move to catch up to the leaders, or throw her support behind teammate Karol-Ann Canuel.

Shes a better climber than me so I tried to help Karol-Ann out and I rode my pace at the final climb, Kirchmann said.

Although the Olympics are over for her, Kirchmann is going to stay until Thursday tosoak up some of the Rio atmosphere, before returning to Europe.

Ill be cheering on my teammates in the time trials and hanging out with my parents (Rob and Gina) for a couple of days, Kirchmann said.
