In the Habs Room: Petry s mistake proved costly in loss to Wild

“We sent him to the hospital for some tests to make sure he didn’t break anything,” said coach Claude Julien.

Weber was on the charter flight to Detroit after the game, but Julien said he wasn’t sure whether Weber would play against the Red  Wings Tuesday (7:30 p.m.,TSN2, RDS, TSN-690 Radio).

The Canadiens put up a better effort than  in Minnesota, and Julien said he felt his team outplayed the Wild and had more scoring chances.

“I thought we played a better game, but one mistake cost us,” said Julien.

The one mistake came from Jeff Petry, who was forced into a larger role once again after Weber was scratched for the final two periods. Petry played more than 27 minutes but said fatigue wasn’t a factor in the errant pass that set up Granlund for the game’s only goal.

“It was just a mistake,” said Petry. “I should have used the boards. I thought I saw where Mikey (Reilly) was and I put it right in the middle. I should have just sucked the forechecker in a little bit more and used an indirect instead of trying to make a direct pass.”

The pass was picked off by Granlund and Petry compounded his error by dropping back to the crease where he prevented the screened Carey Price from moving to his right. Price was already playing too high in the crease and there was a large hole behind him when Granlund pulled wide to score at 6:58 of the third period.

The giveaway wasn’t the only misfortune to befall Petry. He had an opening late in the game but his stick broke as he took his shot.

“That’s frustrating,” said Petry. “I had a couple of looks early in the game from that spot. I guess it’s part of the game. Those sticks, you never know when you have a fracture in them and there it goes.”

Petry had a game-high six shots on goal and had six others blocked. He also had three giveaways.

Devan Dubnyk made 32 saves for his first shutout of the season, He has a 9-1-1 career record against the Canadiens. Price stopped 24 shots and said there was a possibility he would play in Detroit.

“We’ll see tomorrow,” he said. “Obviously, with the travel coming up you never really know how you’ll respond.”

Julien expressed some frustration with the officiating and complained that the Canadiens don’t get the benefit of the doubt when playing at home. He noted that Max Domi took an elbow to the head from former Canadien Greg Pateryn late in the game and, when Domi tried to retaliate, he and Pateryn both went to the box.

“We should have had a power play there,” said Julien.

Not that it would have made a difference. The Montreal power play is 0-for-9 over the past four games and has the worst record in the league.

The loss prevented the Canadiens from reclaiming one of the two wild-card spots in the Eastern Conference. Montreal is one point behind the Islanders and the Sabres, but the Islanders have three games in hand while Buffalo has played one fewer game.
