Less than two days after taking the prime ministerial jet to Florida for his spring vacation, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau used it to quietly return to Ottawa for a day of ‘private meetings.’
Trudeau and his family are currently spending spring break in a house on North Captiva Island , a remote tourist destination off the coast of south west Florida.
Online flight tracking confirms that the prime minister’s jet, a Bombardier Challenger 604 with the call sign “Can Force One,” first touched down in Fort Myers, FL on Saturday afternoon.

According to Trudeau’s official itinerary , his 21-hour return to Ottawa was spent in “private meetings.”
“What I told some journalists even on Sunday was … ‘don’t be surprised if the PM comes back for meetings this week’ and he did indeed have a couple of meetings yesterday,’” said Chantal Gagnon, senior press secretary with the Office of the Prime Minister.
Gagnon cited a meeting with Finance Minister Bill Morneau, photos of which were subsequently posted to Twitter.
“He also had a call with the Kenyan president (Uhuru Kenyatta) about the Ethiopian Airlines crash,” she said.
North Captiva Island is accessible only by charter boat, although Trudeau appears to have been brought there by a patrol boat operated by U.S. Customs and Border Protection. The prime ministerial entourage has occupied two homes on the island, where Trudeau continues to have access to the technology required for domestic and international calls.
The local Lee County Sheriff’s Office confirmed that they have dedicated a contingent of officers to protect Trudeau at the request of the RCMP. “Whenever dignitaries are in town, whether it be American or international, we provide assistance, but as a matter of principle we don’t comment on the assistance we provide,” said a spokesman.
It is also possible his visit has drawn in agents from the United States Secret Service, the agency usually tasked with protecting visiting heads of government.
However, Trudeau’s cross-continental vacation shuttling comes just as his government is amping up promotion of their climate change agenda. On Wednesday morning, only hours after his 9:21 p.m. return to Florida, Trudeau promising that his government would make “big polluters pay.”
All told, Trudeau’s day-long Ottawa sojourn required a 4,200 km round trip and five hours, 37 minutes of flight time. According to JetAdvisors.com, the average fuel consumption of a Challenger 604 jet is 1,324 litres of fuel per hour .
