Anybody who’s been a fan of Group B rally racing will be familiar with the sound of Audi’s turbocharged five-cylinder engine, the unique 2.5-litre engine brought the brand many victories in rally and GT racing.
Audi shared a glimpse of the upcoming RS3 model featuring an auspicious camouflage pattern with a set of numbers on the side. The numbers are a reference to the firing order of the five-cylinder engine.

The outgoing RS3 featured the same engine, but producing 394 horsepower and 354 pound-feet of torque. While that was good for a zero to 60 time of 3.4 seconds, the upcoming model will likely add a few more horses to drop that number down even further. Of course, it will still feature Audi’s venerable Quattro all-wheel-drive, and likely a dual clutch automatic transmission.
The standard Audi A3 was recently redesigned, and the RS3 model builds upon that update with wider flares, rear diffuser, trunk spoiler, and larger wheels. North Americans will only receive the sedan version of the model, while the rest of the world will also have a hatchback option.
In an era where all the interesting engines are being tossed to the wayside in favour of electrification, it’s nice to see that a few select brands still care about the character of the internal combustion engine.
