Fans of General Motors history should gird their loins and lock their bank accounts. One of the largest collections of GM muscle-car history is headed to the block in a no-reserve auction.

There are 200 vehicles on offer, plus a raft of memorabilia and collector items, which for car enthusiasts really puts an emphasis on the final four letters of Rick Treworgy’s last name.

He’s the owner of all this Americana, holding court over a museum called Muscle Car City in Punta Gorda, Florida. Housed in a former Wal-Mart and home to some of the rarest and most sought-after GM machines in America, the facility also included a parts and speed shop – not to mention a ’50-style diner – but is now in the process of shutting its doors later this month.

There are Corvettes of all description, ranging from a delivery-mile C8 to any number of ’60s and ’70s models with rare options packages. Camaros, Chevelles, and Impalas are parked cheek-to-jowl, littering the area like common Corolla sedans. Other marques of the GM empire are also well represented, with plenty of Pontiacs and Oldsmobiles sharing space with notable vintage trucks and a few brawny SUVs.

Resto-mods abound, with modern powertrains lurking under vintage sweeping bodywork. There are also multiple Cadillac models, creating a gathering of fins to rival any shark tank. Pre-war and special-use vehicles (think fire trucks and the like) can also be found among the auction lots. Everything looks spotless and most seem concours-quality.

This isn’t the first time we’ve seen this type of wholesale exodus. Rock-star collector Ron Pratte spent many years (and several millions) buying up collector cars and memorabilia, most notably at the annual Barrett-Jackson soirée in Arizona. He sold his collection, and every stick of furniture in his display hangar, about five years ago.

Treworgy is said to have stated he planned on retiring from the car racket next year and didn’t amass such a collection to make money. Still, with all these gems in one spot, the man is surely going to see a solid return on his investments.

The auction will be held January 22 and 23.
