Deadline nears to join the committee for new Southgate fund

The Township of Southgate decided in 2021 to put money into creating a new fund with the Community Foundation Grey Bruce, and those who want to have a say in where the money goes have until May 9 to apply.

The municipality had been thinking of the initiative for some time, wanting to do long-term good by investing capital that can generate interest for worthwhile projects.

The permanent endowed fund will be managed, like five other similar municipal funds, by the Community Foundation Grey Bruce.

Among the committee members’ tasks will be helping to explain the fund’s mission and encouraging other groups and businesses to contribute as well.

They will also consider applications in the future. The more money invested, the sooner the threshold is reached where interest is enough to distribute.

The five to seven members will meet about four times a year. Terms for board members will be three years.

The model is already in practice in the local area with existing community funds for Grey Highlands, Kincardine, Meaford, Owen Sound and Saugeen Shores.
