Fort St. John garden bed rentals open

The Northern Environmental Action Team is planning for another garden season, with community beds available for residents to rent.

The beds are a continuation of demonstration gardens installed last year. Executive Director Karen Mason-Bennett says composts, berries, perennial fruit, and a tea herb garden are in the works for the 2021 growing season.

“Last year we made a really concerted effort to add garden beds. Demand was up across the country, it was very good time to be in the garden business,” Mason-Bennett said.

Eighteen more beds have been added to the gardens as of last year. Last year’s gardeners have first dibs, with the remaining space offered on a first come, first serve basis.

“If you had a bed last year, you get first right of refusal. That’s kind of where we’re at right now, just trying to figure out who wants what and when,” said Mason-Bennett, noting beds are also available at participating schools such as Robert Ogilvie and Ecole Central.

“The idea with NEAT and community gardens is just trying to create networks of food within our community and support skill development as we go along,” she said.

A work bee is planned for May 22 to get the gardens in shape for planting, with more details to be released at a later date.

Registrations are already underway and those interested can can register online. Rental fees go to offset the costs of staffing, maintenance, and water.
