Sudbury’s health unit reports 36 new COVID-19 cases

Public Health Sudbury and Districts reported an increase in COVID-19 cases in the Sudbury and Manitoulin districts on Wednesday.

According to the health unit’s website, 36 new cases were reported in the region, including 32 in Greater Sudbury and four in the Sudbury district.

Five of the new cases are associated with an outbreak, three are close contacts of a confirmed case, and one has no known epidemiological link.

The remaining 27 cases are still under investigation.

There are 251 active COVID-19 cases in the health unit’s service area, including 22 in Greater Sudbury, 27 in the Sudbury district, and two in the Manitoulin district.

A total of 1,832 cases confirmed or presumed to be variants of concern have been identified in the region.

Public Health reported one new COVID-19 outbreak, this time among DMC Mining Services employees at the Glencore Craig Mine on Wednesday.

The health unit is currently monitoring 21 active COVID-19 outbreaks in its service area, including nine at schools and three on school buses.

Outbreaks have also been reported at Aaron Taxi, Vale’s Creighton Mine, Chartwell Westmount on William Retirement Residence, March of Dimes, and Vale’s North Mine.

The hospital is currently reporting 18 confirmed cases of COVID-19 amongst admitted patients, including eight in the intensive care unit and 10 in other units.

There are also six admitted patients who have been tested for COVID-19 and are awaiting their results.

Public Health has performed 322,719 COVID-19 tests as of Nov. 22.

In partnership with First Nations and primary care providers, the health unit has administered 273,366 first and second doses of COVID-19 vaccines.

Some 141,563 people in the Sudbury and Manitoulin districts have received their first dose, and 125,636 are fully vaccinated.
