Travel delays on Hwy. 40

The much-anticipated twinning project on Hwy. 40 has begun, and motorists can expect delays starting Monday as construction of a second bridge over the Wapiti River begins.

There will be no access to Hwy. 40 northbound or southbound from Hwy. 666; motorists will have to detour using Township Road 700.

There will also be no access to Hwy. 666 westbound from Hwy. 40 northbound, and motorists are advised to detour using Township Road 700.

The detour and temporary traffic signals are expected to be in place until late fall.

At the recent State of the Region online event, County of Grande Prairie Reeve Leanne Beaupre said the project could generate as much as $483.7 million in economic benefit for the region at last week’s State of the Region address hosted by the Grande Prairie and District Chamber of Commerce.

“We’re committed to transportation networks that keep people safe and goods moving, bringing the community together and drive the regional economy,” said Beaupre.

She noted that about half of the county’s budget is directed towards county and regional transportation networks.

The $106 million project plans to twin Hwy. 40 from the southern end of Grande Prairie across the Wapiti River, a distance of approximately 19 kilometres.

The county and the M.D. of Greenview have invested $60 million into the project, said Dale Smith, M.D. of Greenview reeve.

“We felt that this project was critical to the region,” said Smith, noting that the oil and gas industry is beginning to pick up along with timber resources.
