Anunoby, VanVleet likely won’t be considered for NBA awards with Raptors on fringe of playoff chase

The ballots are arriving in the in-boxes of about 100 media members who regularly cover the NBA and its teams, ballots that will determine the season award winners in this most convoluted of seasons.
They have to be filed before even the play-in portion of the playoff begin, so are based solely on the 72-game regular season.
And it will spark, as it always does, debate between fans about the merits of players from their favourite teams when compared to others. Sometimes that debate gets heated, sometimes it is not the least bit based in fact and the subjective nature of the balloting should always be taken into consideration.
Voters — and the Star has had a ballot just about every year of Raptors existence — weigh a variety of factors, some statistical, some team-wide, sometimes just what they feel and have seen. For some “team” categories, there are also positional needs that must be addressed, further complicating matters.
Much of the speculation among Raptors fans will be where OG Anunoby, Fred VanVleet and, to a lesser degree, Chris Boucher fit into the grand scheme of things.
Anunoby and VanVleet should create some buzz among voting for the two all-defensive teams and while Boucher’s candidacy stalled late in the season, there will be those who trumpet his worthiness as a most improved player candidate.
