Mohamed Salah returned to scoring ways as Liverpool defeated Manchester United 2-0 in the 23rd fixture of the English Premier League.
Liverpool got off to a lightening start, as they made it 1-0 in 14th minute through Virgil Van Dijk, who converted Trent Alexander-Arnold’s crossed corner kick past David De Gea with a bullet header.
Roberto Firmino scored the second for the Reds around 10 minutes later, however, the goal was ruled out for a foul against Van Dijk.
41 minutes into the game, United wasted a huge chance to score the leveler, when Anthony Martial found Aaron Wan-Bissaka with a defense-splitting through pass. The fullback squared the ball to Andreas Pereira, who failed to convert from a close range.
In the final moments of the first half, Salah advanced towards the box and released Sadio Mane in a one-on-one situation with De Gea. The Spaniard pulled off an excellent save to deny Mane’s left-footed strike.
In the second half, Liverpool picked up from where they left, when Andrew Robertson went up the left flank and sent a low cross towards Salah, who failed to send the ball home a very close range just two minutes after the restart.
The Reds kept pilling up the pressure and in the 49th minute, Jordan Henderson’s left-footed screamer cannoned off the post.
Two minutes past the one-hour mark, Georginio Wijnaldum found Mane up the left-wing, but the Senegalese poor shot crept inches away from the post.
In the dying moments of the game, Salah made it 2-0. The Egyptian Kind received a long pass from Alisson Becker and went up towards the box, before drilling a composed shot into the bottom corner.
After the important victory, Liverpool extended the gap on top of the league table to 16 points as they moved to the 64th point before facing Wolverhampton Wanderers on the 23rd of January.
